Communication

At GJDRDS we encourage each student to use their mode of communication appropriately.  Whether it is through picture exchange (PECS), American Sign Language, or verbal language, we believe it is important for each student to be able to communicate their needs and wants. Teachers collaborate closely with speech therapists to ensure each student’s communication needs are being addressed appropriately. Speech therapists teach skills and provide tools necessary to assist our students to  effectively communicate.  Tools include, Picture Exchange Communication boards, augmentative devices, and sign language.  Speech therapists and teachers build correspondence with administration and families to aide in the introduction and instruction of these tools in the home.
